If there's something I love about London, it's the city's endless treasure collection of vintage and retro finds. London is the ideal location to find an unusual gift for an occasion or a retro present for Christmas, or anything more meaningful than a typical high-end set.

One of my favorite weekend rituals is wandering through the city's antique market. Portobello Road always tops my list, not only for its vibrant riot of colour, but also for the sheer variety. You can find everything from mid-century homewares and enamel kitchen tins to classic vinyl records that still crackle with life. I've lost track of how many times I've left with "just one gift" and it turned into a sack full of treasures.

I like going to Shoreditch or Islington for something more curated. There are vintage boutiques in these neighborhoods that specialize in certain times. For example there's a store that specializes in 1940s fashion and another one that focuses on 1970s lighting. You can spend a whole hour chatting with the owner about the history of the lamp or the leather satchel.

When purchasing retro-themed gifts I always search for website (see more) authenticity. A maker's mark or original labels, or even a little wear and tear can add to the character. The antique dealers of London are generally eager to tell the story behind the item. This story is usually included in the present. Imagine handing over an old scarf that traveled across Europe in the 1950s or a typewriter that tapped out love letters from decades ago. It can transform an item of gift into a piece history.

Of course, a large part of the fun is mixing old with the new. I often put together a vintage piece of furniture with modern packaging or fresh flowers to give it a modern twist. It's a great way give something old a new look, while still honoring the original design.

London offers a variety of seasonal fairs. These are especially popular around Christmas. The Southbank Winter Market and various pop-up vintage fairs blend the joy of the season with stalls full of unique, one-of-a-kind gifts. I never leave empty handed, and more often than not I take home something for myself, too.

In a world filled with disposable products, giving an old-fashioned or retro present is a thoughtful and personal gesture. It's a salute to craftsmanship and to stories that should be kept and to the satisfaction of finding beauty in objects that have endured the test of time. For me, London is the perfect background for that huntan urban area that is proud of its past, yet remains vibrant and alive.
